BASICS OF SSL

What is SSL Security?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protocol is used to encrypt communications between users and e-commerce websites (web stores, shops, companies). Its encryption protects the data against interception and tampering by a third-party. SSL provides users with an added layer of security so they feel secure when sharing sensitive information like credit card numbers and personal data.

An SSL-protected website will display an https URL and a little padlock in the address bar.

Aztus GeoTrust SSL Certificates offer 256bit encryption and protection amounts up to 500 000$ against compromise such as:

  • Loss
  • Theft
  • Modification
  • Unauthorized access of a private key corresponding to the public key listed in a GeoTrust Certificate by cryptographic analysis, key extraction, or any other means.

Why do I need SSL Security?

SSL is essential if you are collecting any kind of personal data and sensitive information needed to conduct e-commerce such as:

  • credit cards
  • payment information
  • phone numbers
  • e-mails

SSL encrypts data in a safe and confidential manner. Most of your customers will be hesitant to share data with your company if they are unsure of its security.

SSL is now more than ever a necessity, especially for any business that wants to comply with the PCI Compliance standards set by the PCI Security Standards Council

What is an SSL Certificate?

An SSL Certificate is a security certificate that contains a digital signature to connect a public key to an identity. A SSL Certificate uses RSA (an algorithm for public-key cryptography). With an SSL Certificate on your website, information sent between a customer’s computer and your servers is securely encrypted to prevent the interception or tampering of the data. Also, a SSL Certificate indicates the website owner and the certificate provider.

What is a CSR?

CSR stands for 'Certificate Signing Request'. It contains information about the person or organization requesting the certificate (information to be contained in the certificate itself) and a public key relating to that person or organization.

The CSR is sent by the requesting party to the SSL provider to generate the SSL certificate. The CSR can be generated from your control panel.

How do I file a claim?

To file a Payment Request you need to e-mail the SSL Certificate Provider with a Loss Report (If you are a customer with Aztus, GeoTrust). In that report you need to include

  • Requestor’s name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Certificate serial number
  • Certificate type
  • Certificate effective date
  • Date of loss
  • Brief description of the incident
